Ar88 weight – RCA AR-88D and AR-88LF Radio Receivers

All of the metal tub capacitors are triple-capacitor units that are bolted to the inside walls of the chassis. On early receivers, one has to use the schematic and component location drawings to figure out the correct wire routing and correct component locations.

  • I earned enough to eventually buy an AR88D which came along somehow.

  • The serial numbers still use six digits incorporating leading zeros as the earlier receivers did. The photos show the RDM.

  • Don't review home brewed equipment or home-brew copies of commercially made products.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Unlike some high-end vintage receivers, the 88s have weigght straightforward design and are pretty easy to work on. Tumblr you look at the rear photo above, you can see a rectangular pattern of four holes and a shadow of a data plate. Also, note that the anti-backlash spring is a loop type coupling the two split-gears.

This is followed by grid aluminum oxide paper or steel wool. Most ARD receivers use a "0" in the fifth position but it appears that late in production the fifth digit on these ARD receivers becomes a 1 when the production exceeded 10, receivers. A mechanical mount will have to be made to hold the meter in place. Unfortunately, receiver control of transmission is the opposite of today's normal transmitter control of ham station's "Send-Receive" operations. Of course, this is just a guess.

  • Most were sent to the U. Krenkel was a very active radio amateur.

  • Well, actually the specification of a nominal impedance for a ar88 weight speaker is the "lowest impedance that the speaker load would present in its normal operation over its typical frequency range.

  • It had the CL meter and I lifted the cabinet lid the original cabinet with front panel edge covers and it was clean inside and had the capacitor cover with thumb screws, and all the original RCA mushroom knobs.

  • Some British magazine articles suggest that very early ARs had two different types of chokes. If anyone has a line on one esp a CRB let me know.

So, what was the selling price of the AR? The other side only had this vague ar88 weight that if I passed, I might never get another chance an 88 within driving distance of home. I'm 75 now and stuffed. It's reported that the choke's dc resistance was ohms for L and ohms for L

Most of the CR versions have smooth finish umber panels but there are some exceptions. There's an 88 for eBay sale in Australia wwight a bloke who has high prices on everything That said ar88 weight hear them selling at 50 quid or even dollars is ridiculous Apart from the venting taking over the entire upper portion of the rear of the cabinet, you can see that the fittings for the cover plate surrounding the lower access opening have been deleted as well. A mechanical mount will have to be made to hold the meter in place. Fowler while George Blaker handled the mechanical design.

RCA AR88D overhaul

By late-WWII production, the tuning dials became alternating black and light-yellow backgrounds with the nomenclature oppositely alternating accordingly. It really isn't ar88 weight which resistors will drift because sometimes you'll find the 2. One of the references warns about excessive running on headphones, as this may damage the output valve, and it suggests a cathode bias resistor of ohms. At the bottom of the rack is the speaker panel which allowed monitoring of individual receivers or one selected receiver as the diversity audio output of all three receivers. The

The audio response was carefully designed in the AR to provide relatively low distortion, reduced harmonic content and ar88 weight range reproduction weiggt many varied applications. As individual receivers both types perform almost identically. Mask off the area if the white is damaged around the band indicators. Inside, the "B" has push-pull audio output. Details of the Individual Receiver Versions by Model Designation AR - The earliest stand-alone receiver version which may or may not have a cabinet depending on installation.

Some model just had a the model number in the window. Perhaps logging-in and telling us we wasted his time was a waste of time There was no restoration to be done. At first it was the WWII meter shortage that was responsible. And, finding one locally is very rare. Model SC is like the CR88 but shows only the band in use. Someone actually added the handles off a BC to the SC cabinet and I had thought of removing them.

It is unfortunate that age and CV19 have knocked off a huge number of people who lived traditional post WW11 lives, lived in homes with vegetable gardens and big backyards sold pay huge feees to nursing homes. Radio Boulevarde put it this way Two filter chokes are used. Rating: Time Owned: Great! By late-WWII production, the tuning dials became alternating black and light-yellow backgrounds with the nomenclature oppositely alternating accordingly.

My item have a lighter area at the same place on the backside, with the size that fits a serialnumber plate. Factory original panels seem to all be various color paint over ar88 weight steel with silk-screened nomenclature with the exception of early WWII production that had engraved nomenclature rather than silk-screened. The holes will also allow a way to grab the bottom plate for removal. Rebuilding the Capacitors - All of the filter and bypass capacitors in the AR receivers are extremely high quality, oil filled units that rarely fail - this includes the filter capacitors.

There are two individual filter capacitors on top of the chassis and one filter capacitor under the chassis. Once adjusted, each of the three receivers responding with the same gain to the same signal which further enhanced the diversity effect. The driveway degreasers work pretty well in the ultra-sonic and are easy to find anywhere. The receiver seems to operate fine with the RF cover off or missing, too. The value of this resistor determined the how close to zero volts the bias could be reduced by the RF Gain control and therefore controlled the maximum sensitivity of the receiver.

Remove Negative Feedback for "Audio Improvement" - This all depends on what your definition of "audio improvement" is. Some sources even indicate that RCA had made it clear they did not want to see the receivers back in the USA for any reason. Note that the split-gear is mounted to the hub of the tuning condenser drive gear which appears to take up most of the lower part of the photo and is fairly reflective. Thorough cleaning with Glass Plus and a moderately stiff brush will let you know where the dirt leaves off and the paint begins. It's probable that most of the surviving SC receivers ended up being purchased from Fair Radio Sales. It was listed as part number MID. This assures that there is ample clearance for both dials to not interfere with each other and to also assure that the logging dial index doesn't rub against the logging dial hub.

The easiest solution, if your mode of operation is CW, is to operate the station using an electronic TR ar88 weight such as the type made by E. This was due to the provisions in the Lend-Lease Act which stated that materiel had to be either returned or destroyed. Use SBE orange drops as replacement capacitors. Terminal 2 on the receiver is not grounded but achieves its ground inside the Tone Keyer. This does work to control fading to a certain limit determined by the AVC delay and antenna types used.

If you are a radiotelephone commonly known as AM and CW operator ar88 weight you see one, especially if it is in decent shape at a hamfest, don't take a weught on it. The left hand window has the main tuning scale. Produced early part of WWII, earliest versions have solid light-yellow dial not alternating black and yellow scales and possibly the front panel nomenclature might be engraved. Krenkel was a very active radio amateur. Those reviews are subject to removal. The multi-tap potted power supply transformer has a tap for v. I had to have another friend help me carry it into my basement.

  • The filtering is provided by an oil-filled, triple unit utilizing paper capacitors.

  • The "plunger type" trimmer capacitors are replaced with standard trimmer capacitors.

  • Been a good radio not given me any trouble at all,i use it in AM mode. If you are not that type

  • This is a photo of the Portsdown Tunnel communications center that handled wartime communications. Mechanically, the receivers were stoutly built.

ARLF Receiver. Fortunately I had some NOS 1watt resistors for replacements. AR - The earliest stand-alone receiver version which may or may not have a cabinet depending on installation. Here are some things to watch out for when operating an AR receiver or variant for extended periods. WHRM will continue to provide its on-line information source with this website, which has been in operation since Normally, both filter chokes are identical however the round choke is a replacement.

Thanks again for the copy of the two manuals. The article "Getting the best out of your AR88" ar88 weight internet goes quickly to the parts to replace without even testing These diversity set-ups used a different, upgraded receiver, the SC Change R1 and R6 to 47K and R55 to 5. See photo. R21 is mounted on the rear chassis apron. The power transformer was moved forward to have the receiver weight distributed more towards the center of the chassis.

Certainly, by the seventies, many of the ARs that had been released earlier were now exchanging hands between the Russian hams. In the Voice mode, a TR switch will "feedback" unless 'phones are used. Packing looks like the typical cotton waste of the 's and 's.

This ar88 weight a two-position jack and when the 'phone plug weigut "all the way" in, then the 5 ohm resistive load is across the 2. Lee, February In the Voice mode, a TR switch will "feedback" unless 'phones are used. Remount to the plastic dial cover panel and carefully bend the tangs to secure.

However, the model sub-variations use the fifth digit as identification. Extensive modification of vintage ham gear, in order to make its performance more "modern," seems to contradict the whole idea of collecting, restoring and operating vintage radio equipment in the first place. The 3. CRB Chassis. Documentation became "Unclassified" in June The HF front end coils are wound on polystyrene forms that have extremely low losses allowing the receiver to maintain high sensitivity up to 30mc. It is very easy to check these capacitors for leakage current.

The receiver used was the SC ag88 which about were produced. The receivers use three stages of kc IF amplification with stagger-tuned IF transformers. Its main purpose was to protect the alignment adjustments. The designers have put a lot of effort into screening the RF and oscillator circuits to reduce radiation, and making the receiver stable by rugged metal work, temperature compensated oscillator circuits, and a regulated HT supply for the oscillator. Krenkel was a very active radio amateur.

AR Series Chassis. I plan to weignt a wooden box for it to finish ar88 weight off. WHRM will continue to provide its on-line information source with this website, which has been in operation since Reviews are limited to one review per product per reviewer. Changes included a two-position Tone control, a three-position Selectivity switch and a different chassis layout that moved the power transformer forward behind weihht front panel. After WWII, the demand was greatly reduced since the only users were commercial users and the military. There are some photos that show the speaker grille where it appears painted but the RCA manuals always pictured the plated grille. But whenever I have to move the others, I'm thankful that at least that one has handles. Of course the whole issue may simply be nothing more than another example of how challenging it was during the war for various manufacturers to match up identical paints.

Century 21 — Seiki Electronics Inc. I recall fitting out some in Sydney which had no stove or oven, only amicrowave The Lend-Lease Act of Octoberallowed the USA to supply materiel to our Allies in exchange for permission to build and operate bases in the allied countries or territories. If anyone has a line on one esp a CRB let me know. It is a right-hand mechanical zero with full-scale deflection to the left at 5mA.

Zr88 an 8 ohm Z or higher speaker will require the AF gain to be advanced quite a bit further than with the lower Z speakers. I believe that RCA used the same imbedded information in their earlier commercial receiver, the AR The antenna input was moved to the RF tuning box.

They appear to be moulded mica but are in fact paper. Nowadays, most of the ARs in Russia are either in the hands of collector-hams or in various technical or radio museums. Front Panel Colors and Cabinets - The first AR receivers had smooth finish, semi-gloss black painted front panels with engraved nomenclature that was white paint filled. Eventually, most of the receivers have made it to the Canadian government surplus sales and many were available though other Canadian surplus outlets. Crystal Filter Crystals - For some reason many ARs will have had the crystal filter crystal removed.

I'll update this page in due course. Top performance of your AR series receiver will require careful checking and replacement of all out of tolerance resistors. This site requires JavaScript to function properly. The middle photo show the underside with the shield removed from the RF and Mixer coil box. WHRM will continue to provide its on-line information source with this website, which has been in operation since After a good cleaning, the panel can be touched up using matched Artist's Acrylic paint. The knob index line can be filled if necessary with Artist's Acrylic paint mixed to a "manila beige" color.

Suffice it to say that speaker impedance is "nominal impedance" and not a fixed value of load to the circuit. The plating was to reduce the corrosion under the paint. When the case halves are cemented together with epoxy resin, the joint is almost invisible. Plain white will look way too bright.

The condenser cover should be in place for protection of ra88 tuning condenser but a great many are missing and the receiver's performance doesn't seem to suffer with it off. Oil from leaking paper-capacitors had dropped down on the cabinet and spread all around the rim of the bottom-plate. Since the AR series probably should be operated with an electronic T-R switch, in the Voice mode, audio feedback is usually encountered in "transmit. The power, speaker and aerial cables could have been easily accommodated with three small cutouts at the bottom of the cover and the two grommeted holes at the ends of the cutouts were probably guide holes for pins in the inside of the cover, to ensure the Dzus fasteners were properly lined up when attaching the cover. The 3.

This is because that some of the units that was produced as ARD, afterwards has been equipt with an S-meter. Using a close match to the 2. Lucien has started restoring this receiver. Of ar88 weight V-2 gear boxes examined, both had broken teeth on the split-gear and neither gear box operated the main tuning dial smoothly. A lot of restorers think the emblem is chrome plated but it isn't - it's the same material all the way through. The normal ham modification approach added a capacitor or increased the electrostatic coupling with wire stubs to have more BFO injection which seemed to give better results on SSB. The ARs tended to be very heavy towards the rear of the chassis adding to the difficulty of lifting the receiver.

A small donation will help with the ar88 weight of website operation, which includes website hosting fees, data transfer fees, research, photographing and composition. The first release of surplus ARs to the Russian hams was in the lates. Please use PayPal for sending a donation by clicking on the "Donate" Button below.

We couldn't believe how well it worked. It's reported that the choke's dc resistance was ohms for L and ohms for L One exception may be the Super Pro weigut, but no ar88 weight carries both it and its power supply at the same time. I have also found that the standard 4 ohm speakers work fine and allow a lot more choices for quality speaker selection. More than likely the report of a bakelite panel stemmed from an erroneous identification of the gloss black panels used on some RDM component receivers or the early engraved nomenclature panels.

Wave rotation through the ionosphere will cause polarization changes that can affect the signal versus antenna relationship. Inside, the "B" has push-pull audio output. Using a junior hacksaw with a well worn blade with no set, to give a narrow kerf carefully saw around the mould line. You may notice that this section will change as more information is gleaned from the serial numbers reported. For both lists: Various countries shown after the serial number indicate where the receiver is now located.

Nowadays, most of the ARs weiight Russia are either in the hands of collector-hams or in various technical or radio museums. To assure that the passband is symmetrical usually requires a sweep generator ar88 weight oscilloscope for proper alignment a detailed procedure is provided in later version manuals However, if fidelity is not an issue, there is a procedure to align the IF section using just a VTVM but the results are usually not as good as the sweep method. Note the dial mask, the different placement of controls, different front panel mounting and the shorter chrome strips. Oil from leaking paper-capacitors had dropped down on the cabinet and spread all around the rim of the bottom-plate.

  • For some reason I eventually sold it and can remember still carrying it down the hallway to the bloke's car

  • Ar88 weight appears from what has been reported so far that the early production AR for export only had engraved nomenclature. Expect results from subtle to no apparent improvement at all.

  • Will post some photos of it when it arrives. They are all metal valves except for the audio output, rectifier, and regulator.

  • This then allowed the receiver with the highest level response to the desired signal to control the AVC line and therefore the overall receiver gain. Of particular interest is the all-yellow tuning dial which was only used on the early production receivers.

It is typically weigth to read because of the ar88 weight of the photo, but it seems to identify what particular model of AR88 it has been applied to, along with the frequency range of the receiver. The ARLF versions, which were only built in Montreal, found their way to airports, civilian and military, ship-to-shore coastal stations around Canada and for general communications. In the passing of our era where the traditions and links are broken with an horrific past Lucien has started restoring this receiver. Oil from leaking paper-capacitors had dropped down on the cabinet and spread all around the rim of the bottom-plate. If anyone does know a specific price assigned to any of the AR versions, please e-mail me and I will add that information to this article.

  • This site requires JavaScript to function properly.

  • RCA also produced a medium darker brown wrinkle finish version of the CR that was probably for their own broadcast installations.

  • Click the News header on Home page then look for Add News button.

  • I didn't know what it was at first it was buried under piles of junk I had to squeeze through just to get a good look at it.

  • They are all metal valves except for the audio output, rectifier, and regulator. Since the AR chassis is 17" deep very few cabinets other than originals will work.

  • However, it's possible a few receivers are still out there with the Terminal 2 ungrounded at the receiver.

You might ar88 weight have to file the RCA letters depending on how serious the corrosion is. Front Panel Colors and Cabinets - The first AR receivers had smooth finish, semi-gloss black painted front panels with engraved nomenclature that was white paint filled. Replacement of the Mixer tube with a 6BA7 nine-pin tube it was the Mixer tube used in the Collins 75A-4 so it had to be good. The receivers were used to monitor various types of signals and select SW stations to be "jammed. I have not yet been able to pinpoint the year of production, exept that the colors of the dial scale indicates its late WWII or even after

David sc88chas. The site ar88 weight be something of which everyone involved can be proud to say they were a part. Mechanically, the receivers were stoutly built. The speaker cabinet has a back that is screw mounted and that is why the speaker cable exits from the side. One Saturday last year I was at the November Ft. This latter positioning is also required on the receivers with the dial mask installation. Once adjusted, each of the three receivers responding with the same gain to the same signal which further enhanced the diversity effect.

Another exception to the " four or six digit stamped serial number on the chassis" is the manufacture SC receiver which carries its serial number on the metal tag attached to the front panel there is no number stamped on the chassis. Once the bottom is off, you'll have to remove the old capacitors and then wash the entire inside and outside of the can with denatured alcohol to remove the oil residue. These single ball bearings should have a drop or two of 10W oil as a lubricant. The designers have put a lot of effort into screening the RF and oscillator circuits to reduce radiation, and making the receiver stable by rugged metal work, temperature compensated oscillator circuits, and a regulated HT supply for the oscillator.

Removing the bottom plate requires sr88 old-time large soldering iron with a one inch tip. All diversity ar88 weight were normally rack mounted although there were certainly some exceptions, especially after WWII. You'll still hear yourself in the 'phones though. Half-way in was to allow the Hi-Z 'phones to operate in parallel with the 2.

Knobs - Knobs can be cleaned by soaking in a dish washing soap and hot water solution for wsight minutes. If, for some reason, the bias voltage is ar88 weight, the grid will float positive and the tube will conduct heavily. This then allowed the receiver with the highest level response to the desired signal to control the AVC line and therefore the overall receiver gain. Shown in the photo left is the Monitoring Unit. In just one incident, a load of AR receivers was "dumped" into an abandoned well by USA forces after the war ended.

Other collector items. So the first job was to redraw it more conventionally, with the valves the right way up! All of these early receivers were destined for overseas use and are rarely encountered in the USA. Also, if excessive LO radiation made it to the antenna, it was possible for enemy Direction Finding equipment to pinpoint the receiver's location.

One thing that is important relates to receiver operation exclusively on Hi-Z headphones arr88 no loudspeaker connected, in which case the operator must be sure that the 'phones are plugged into the phone jack "all the way" so that it operates just on headphone winding of the audio transformer. The AR provides five steps of selectivity with position 1 and 2 being rather broad for good fidelity while positions 3,4 and 5 use the crystal filter for increasingly narrow bandwidth. All of these receivers have the V-1 gear box installed. If anyone does know a specific price assigned to any of the AR versions, please e-mail me and I will add that information to this article.

  • See schematic right for CL meter connections and resistor changes necessary.

  • The Triple Diversity Receivers. Also, substitution of 6SG7W tubes for standard 6SG7 tubes was supposed to improve signal to noise ratio.

  • It's likely that only the very early Ar88 weight and ARLF receivers will be found with smooth finish painted panels with engraved nomenclature and, as production evolved, the standard finish became black wrinkle finish with white silk-screened nomenclature.

  • Kenwood QR

  • The filtering is provided by an oil-filled, triple unit utilizing paper capacitors.

Turn the knob and by using a file remove material wieght the deep scratches are. WHRM will continue to provide its on-line information source with this website, which has been in operation since It is more time consuming to do this bearing ar88 weight it does need to be repacked for noiseless and smooth operation. One thing that is important relates to receiver operation exclusively on Hi-Z headphones with no loudspeaker connected, in which case the operator must be sure that the 'phones are plugged into the phone jack "all the way" so that it operates just on headphone winding of the audio transformer. Voice could be used but the RDM was primarily for reliable data reception. Ar88 weight two stations were about a half of a mile apart. Mask off the area if the white is damaged around the band indicators. Early receivers had the chassis side panels bolted in place but late receivers will have the chassis side panels spot-welded to the chassis. Fortunately, there are still enthusiasts that scavenge parts in order to perform operational restorations of these incredibly stout receivers.

  • They were good ar88 weight to see out the war at Bletchely Park where victory depended on spot-on surveillance with as little error and drift as possible.

  • If the ar88 weight is the older style with the metal frame holder for the dial index then normally the logging dial should be placed behind the main dial.

  • As individual receivers both types perform almost identically.

  • Here it is, if You want to make a new window, You can try to use this scanned copy! A friend and I carried it out.

Edits will go thru the review Approval process. RCA decided to ar88 weight the "TRANS" wires from the harness to this terminal since it was going to be grounded in normal rack wiring and operation. Visitors to this page since 20 February The receiver seems to operate fine with the RF cover off or missing, too.

Then there's the gear reduction tuning, which means you'll never have another dial cord to restring. This control adjusts the gain at88 the IF section of the receivers by using a variable resistance in the cathode circuit of the 1st and 2nd IF amplifiers. Factory original panels seem to all be various color paint over copper-plated steel with silk-screened nomenclature with the exception of early WWII production that had engraved nomenclature rather than silk-screened. True diversity reception requires the detectors of each receiver to be tied together as the Diode Load and the AVC lines tied together for diversity system stability. Hope you get some good bedtime reading out of those. Someday when we're done moving around and it has a permanent place to sit, I'll pull them off. Voice could be used but the RDM was primarily for reliable data reception.

Ar88 weight have been asked for a scanned copy of the right window on the ARD. This model is fitted with an S meter to indicate signal strength. An amazing thing happened. Now I've got a nicely lighted meter. Today, the AR and its variants can be found in ham shacks and at amateur SWL set-ups around the world.

These are what mount the front panel weignt the side panels. Russian "octal" tubes are used in the earlier versions but later receivers were equipped with some miniature tubes. Today, many ARs are operated in the ham shack with some of the shields missing with no serious issues. When tightening the nut back onto the stud be sure to only tighten enough to compress the lock washer.

The AR became a popular receiver for radio amateurs, who used them well into the s. There are many other colors that show up from time to time, especially cream and very light gray both with black nomenclature, but without a physical inspection it is impossible weighr tell if those colors are original from the factory. Once adjusted, each of the three receivers responding with the same gain to the same signal which further enhanced the diversity effect. This usually resulted in portions of the dial appearing very dark amber and other sections appearing orange or yellow. I believe that RCA used the same imbedded information in their earlier commercial receiver, the AR The receivers use three stages of kc IF amplification with stagger-tuned IF transformers. Sometimes the knobs are scarred from rough handling with deep scratches or small chips.

When the case halves are cemented together with epoxy resin, the joint is almost invisible. Later production Weitht receivers dropped the "C" prefix. The only other thing I had to do, was to screw the rubber feet back on, as they came off due to moving it and its great weight. Actual measurements of the chokes in various ARs show the same result - that both chokes are identical. There is a logging scale visible in the centre window.

Around noon, the guys I was at the fest with wanted to leave. I weiht a lead on one but it's not local. When working on either a standard receiver or a diversity version of the AR series be sure to use the correct schematic since there are many subtle differences between the receivers. There's an 88 for eBay sale in Australia from a bloke who has high prices on everything

Century 21 — Seiki Electronics Inc. Hammarlund SP Ar88 weight Changes included a two-position Tone control, a three-position Selectivity switch and a different chassis layout that moved the power transformer forward behind the front panel. There seems to be some grumbling, dismay, confusion about the choke set up on the AR Lafayette HAA.

However, many AR receivers are serialized with only five digits. If you examine the Micamold capacitors carefully you will almost always see that the center of the capacitor body is bulging due to excessive leakage current causing heat buildup and the resulting swelling or bulge. The AR provides five steps of selectivity with position 1 and 2 being rather broad for good fidelity while positions 3,4 and 5 use the crystal filter for increasingly narrow bandwidth. Original RCA manuals are high-quality publications with heavy covers. Operational and Modification Caveats. Sign in Register. The receivers were MFP'd and the chassis appears gold colored because of it.

When shipped as a seperate item to convert a rack mount chassis to cabinet mode, the cabinet must have come as a kit with the back cover, the two front edge adaptors and mounting hardware. In early Diversity receivers, the 2. There it was on a table, a nice looking CR The inner conductors are black and white rubber sheathed, but the white can be coated an appropriate shade of green to look like the wartime original issue. With that, the CR88's single ended 6K6 was indistinguishable from any push pull output and with the wide passband settings that only involved IF coupled filtering, the audio quality was excellent.

Those reviews will be removed. There's an 88 for eBay sale in Australia ar88 weight a bloke who has high prices on everything I cannot spot any references to their intended use either. A friend and I carried it out. The dial color we see today on the AR receivers is much darker than original. All of these early receivers were destined for overseas use and are rarely encountered in the USA.

  • When working on either a standard receiver or a diversity version of the AR series be sure to use the correct schematic since there are many subtle differences between the receivers. The ultra-heavy duty construction made for a stable receiver but also added to the weight.

  • There is a logging scale visible in the centre window.

  • He is going to ar88 weight some photos and as soon as I see them I will pass them along. There are some photos that show the speaker grille where it appears painted but the RCA manuals always pictured the plated grille.

Used in dual "D" diversity and triple diversity for overseas comm's these would have been hooked into some flash antenae. Deight, most probably all of these incredible Triple Diversity Receivers were scrapped out with usually only the receivers themselves surviving to be sold as surplus. There are double IF transformers either side of the second IF amplifier. Last edited by David Dunlop on Nov Mon 25, am, edited 2 times in total. No connections to the "Diversity" terminal or the "Monitor" output are necessary for individual operation. What a beautiful example of 's "

Oil from leaking paper-capacitors had dropped down on the cabinet and spread all around the aar88 of the bottom-plate. The only rivets used in the receiver are for the clips that mount the adjustment tools. Other collector items. Be gentle - don't scrub. Note that these split gears are coupled using a coil spring type of anti-backlash arrangement.

Well, actually the specification of a nominal impedance for a typical speaker is the "lowest impedance that the speaker load would present in its normal operation over its typical frequency range. On the bearing that is for the tuning condenser shaft you will need to work the grease in from the shaft side. Compressing the lock washer provides ample tightness. Black is applied first, then white and finally the yellowish-greenish protective layer. I have a feeling that this modification originated around the time that the receivers had aged enough when capacitor problems and resistor drift were affecting the audio output and the receiver would have benefited more from a rebuild and alignment rather than removal of the negative feedback.

On the last ar88 weight this might be understandable since the crystal plugs into a socket on top of the chassis. The filter capacitors change over the years with early receivers using an oil filled, three capacitor pack. After the war ended, it is assumed that none were returned and it's unlikely that any were destroyed. It has been very nicely restored, and repainted, and virtually nothing had to be done.

On early receivers, one has to use the schematic and component location drawings to figure out the correct wire routing and correct component locations. It is also very stable. None seight the early AR series manuals provide detailed wiring diagrams which are different from schematics and are helpful in locating specific component placement or wire routing. The normal ham modification approach added a capacitor or increased the electrostatic coupling with wire stubs to have more BFO injection which seemed to give better results on SSB. Also, substitution of 6SG7W tubes for standard 6SG7 tubes was supposed to improve signal to noise ratio. Certainly, by the seventies, many of the ARs that had been released earlier were now exchanging hands between the Russian hams.

Most of the QSL cards from these Russian hams would just say that the receiver was a "14 tube Superhet" but we all knew that meant they were using an AR When operating in diversity, it is necessary to have all of the second detectors outputs tied together which is done through the "Diode Load" and "Diode Return" connections. Additionally, all of the remaining 6SG7 tubes were replaced with 6BA6 tubes. After the war it is estimated that around — units has been produced.
